A quantitative study was conducted among University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) undergraduates to explore the role of positive and negative emotions in working memory performance. A total of thirty participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups (positive emotion, negative emotion, and neutral emotional stimulus), each with ten participants. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) was used to assess participants' emotional states after the induction of emotions through carefully selected film clips. The Backward Digit Span Test (BDT) was used to assess working memory performance after emotion induction. The results of the study were analyzed using a One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), which yielded a p-value of 0.099, indicating that there is no statistically significant difference in the mean scores of positive, negative, and neutral emotion stimuli on verbal working memory performance. Despite this, the mean score and standard deviation indicated that those exposed to positive emotions scored higher than those exposed to negative or neutral emotional stimuli. Thus, the findings show the complexities of the relationship between emotions and working memory performance, indicating that further research is needed to further explore this dynamic.
