| dc.description | This study explores the influence of personality traits and study habits on academic success among undergraduate students at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). A total of 400 students participated in this quantitative, correlational research. The Big Five Inventory 2 Short Form (BFI-2-S) was used to assess personality traits, including openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The Study Habits Inventory (SHI) measured behavioural aspects such as time management, motivation, and concentration. Academic success was evaluated using students’ self-reported Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and their satisfaction with academic performance. Multiple regression analysis revealed that conscientiousness (β = .173, p = .011) and openness (β = .144, p = .026) significantly predicted higher CGPA. In contrast, extraversion (β = –.159, p = .024), agreeableness (β = –.175, p = .007), and neuroticism (β = –.115, p = .023) were negatively associated with academic performance. In a separate model, study habits were found to significantly predict students’ satisfaction with their academic performance (β = .483, p < .001), indicating that effective time management and focus contribute to a more positive academic experience. These findings highlight the importance of both personality and behavioural factors in shaping academic outcomes. The study provides practical implications for counsellors, academic institutions and organization to design targeted strategies that support personal success based on their individual traits and learning behaviours. | |
