Abstract
Description
Self-regulated learning in workplace has become the topic of interest in the recent years due to its potential to improve the individual learning performance. Self-regulated learning enhances the understanding on the environmental and behavioural factors that affect or effected in individual learning. This study examined self-regulated learning in the workplace and the employees’ belief towards self-regulated learning. This study was conducted in a public sector organisation namely Jabatan Penerangan Malaysia, Sarawak (JPMS). Through a survey, a Self-Regulated Learning in Workplace Questionnaire (SRLWQ) was distributed to the participants. In addition, selected participants were also interviewed. 60 participants was recruited in a study through face-to-face and online survey, meanwhile seven respondents were selected for the interview. Statistical tests such as one-way independent ANOVA and Pearson Correlation were used to analyse the data. This study revealed that 58.3% respondents showed high level of self-regulated learning in the workplace. This study also found a significant difference in employee’s self-regulated learning across different positions, F(2,57) = 3.889, p = .026. The management group showed higher level of self-regulated learning compared to the support staff (Group 2). This finding could be due to the fact that the management group have more opportunities to be involved in learning activities in the workplace such as planning, discussions and interacting with others or resources, thus allowing them to exercise self-regulated learning more often. The finding also showed moderate relationship between self-regulated learning and workplace learning activity (r = 0.573, p < 0.01). Based on the findings in this study, self-regulated learning in the workplace depends on oneself to enhance their knowledge towards self-development. Self-regulated learning was also influenced by the workplace environment whereby the top management plays a vital role to create a positive and conducive environment for employees to continuously learning.
