The challenges of infant care, particularly for single mothers, can lead to significant mental and physical strain, making it critical to develop solutions that support effective caregiving. The CradleSense project addresses this issue by proposing an IoT-based smart cradle system designed to automate aspects of infant care and monitoring. Infants are highly sensitive to environmental changes, and their needs often require immediate attention, which can be taxing for single mothers who balance multiple responsibilities. The proposed system integrates a Raspberry Pi controller with an array of sensors, including sound, motion, temperature and humidity. These sensors work together with actuators such as a servo-driven rocking mechanism and speakers, enabling the cradle to detect and respond to a variety of conditions, including crying and motion. The system’s functionality is managed through a custom-built mobile application, which provides real-time alerts and remote control capabilities. This personalised feedback allows mothers to make informed decisions, ensuring better care. Developed using the Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodology, the system emphasizes iterative design and user-centric feedback to deliver a robust and efficient solution. Python scripting on a Raspbian OS drives the system’s operation, while its modular design ensures adaptability to various caregiving scenarios. The CradleSense system aspires to alleviate the challenges of infant care by combining advanced IoT capabilities with practical applications for everyday use. Its multifunctional design promotes timely intervention and efficient caregiving, contributing significantly to the mental and physical well-being of both infants and their caregivers. While its innovative approach holds significant promise, current limitations include hardware constraints and the potential need for further refinement in environmental monitoring accuracy. Nonetheless, CradleSense represents a vital step towards integrating technology into infant care, addressing the pressing need for smarter, more accessible solutions in modern parenting.
