Man-made slopes, loosely compacted slopes and deep tropical weathering have caused numerous slope failures every year in Malaysia. Frequent landslide incident caused those public who stay on hill sites become concerned and this situation has turned into serious public issues. In this study, a slope drainage system is designed with the effect of rainfall infiltration in tropical area. Rainfall simulator, model box design, soil (sand) specification, filter materials and pipe design are the parameters that were studied in this research. The rainfall simulator with the flow rate of 16 Litre per minute (LPM), distance of 72 cm from the nozzle to the surface of the sand model were chosen to run all the experiments in this study, because at this flow rate and height, the rainfall can evenly covering all the area on the sand’s surface. The main focus of this study is to identify which horizontal drain with caging design is more efficient to drain out the rain water in the soil. Four different dimension of caging were designed in performing the experiment; Experiment 1 (perforated pipe wrapped with multiple layers of geotextile until 6 mm thick); Experiment 2 (perforated pipe wrapped with multiple layers of geotextile until 12 mm thick); Experiment 3 (the width only of the caging increased to 160 mm) and Experiment 4 (the height only of the caging increased to 160 mm). Each experiment was conducted three times to ensure consistency. From the results, it was found that the second design (Experiment 2) of caging gave the best result with average discharge rate of 15.874 × 10-6 m3/s. In conclusion, an increased in the multiple layers of geotextile wrapped around the perforated pipe will increase the hydraulic conductivity for the inner geotextile, it was found that the dimension of the caging do effect the water discharge rate.
