| dc.description | The existence of poultry in Malay proverbs that is signified by human behaviour can be seen through the literal meaning of the proverb. Poultry or scientifically classed as Aves are animals that have wings (either fly or not), hot-blooded, two-legged and lay eggs. It is also known as vertebrate animals found throughout the world including in the desert, the north and south pole and in tropical rain forests. The findings of this data are derived from Kamus Peribahasa Melayu Edisi Kelima by Rahman (2017), Kamus Istimewa Peribahasa Melayu Edisi Kedua by Hussain (2016) and Kamus Peribahasa Melayu by Said (2013) on the basis of qualitative approaches through document analysis that involves the Malay proverb data which have been recorded beforehand. The findings show that, there are 207 poultry in Malay proverbs. In this study, the image of poultry in Malay proverbs are represented by chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), bird (Bird), duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and goose (Anserini). The identified proverbs displaying these birds were further subdivided into eight specific domains which are habit, useless, sustenance, irony, treacherous, careful, powerful and partner. A total of 11 Malay proverbs for each domain were analysed using Inquisitive Semantic approach by Jalaluddin (2014). In this study, the Bridging Cross Reference (BCR) approach by Kempson (1986) was also applied based on the corpus of data obtained from Pangkalan Korpus Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and Malay Concordance Project (MCP). The purpose of this approach is to further validate the meaning of the proverb. The findings show that lexical selection of poultry in Malay proverbs is associated with implicit meanings based on the cognitive and philosophical life of the Malay community in ancient times. It is also found that the true meaning of the proverb is reflected in the common sense and intelligence of the Malay community. | |
